Xenoglaux: Unraveling an Enigma

At Abra Patricia-Alto Nieva, Northern Peru’s Mecca for rare bird seekers, you can almost expect something special to happen if you give it the chance. However, as a two-man investigation team from Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN), we hadn’t dared expect anything quite as special as numerous encounters with Xenoglaux loweryi, one of the world’s least-known birds. First discovered in 1976, the Long-whiskered Owlet was previously known from only three sites: two in the immediate Abra Patricia-Alto Nieva area, and one in the Cordillera de Colán. Our encounters were in an area approximately five kilometres from the type locality. The owlet is considered globally Endangered by BirdLife International, with its population estimated to be less than 1000, and possibly as low as 250 individuals. Due to the rapid destruction of its montane forest habitat in its tiny range at 1890- 2350 m . elevation, it is inferred that the species is in serious decline, but to date no true population data exist. Until recently, no protected area of any kind existed in the owlet’s range.
 

As part of their Northern Peru Project, ECOAN, in partnership with American Bird Conservancy (ABC), began purchasing parcels of land from local land owners in the Abra Patricia-Alto Nieva area in 2005. The aim was to create a Private Reserve to protect the Long-whiskered Owlet and other threatened species that inhabit these mysterious montane forests, and by February 2007, over 2450 hectares had been purchased. At that point, David Geale and Juvenal Ccahuana, assisted by the rangers of the growing reserve, began an ongoing inventory and monitoring of the avifauna of these land parcels. The rangers – Domingo, Roberto, Santiago and Ever – are local residents with intimate knowledge of the land, and they, along with Juan of the Alto Mayo Chapter of the Protecting Neotropical Migrants in the Andes Project, were essential to our early success in the investigations .

Xenoglaux: Lechucita Bigotona.

Un equipo de investigadores de la Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN), lograron ver después de mucho tiempo a la lechuza bigotona Xenoglaux loweryi, de la familia Strigidae; especie considerada la mas pequeña de su grupo la cual fue fotografiado y luego de , capturarlo, fue soltado. Esta ave es uno de los menos conocidos del mundo. Primero descubierto en 1976 y con reportes de sólo tres sitios: dos en el área de Abra Patricia- Alto Nieva, y uno en la Cordillera de Colán.. Especie endémica para el Perú y considerada por BirdLife Internacional “En peligro de extinción” y con una población estimada entre 250 a 1000 individuos.Debido a la destrucción rápida de su hábitat del bosque entre los 1890 a 2350 m se infiere que la especie está en descenso grave, pero no hay datos exactos de la población actual existente.

La Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN), American Bird Concervancy ( ABC) y con el apoyo financiero de Gordon and Bety Moore Foundation comenzaron con proyectos y compra de terrenos de dueños locales en el área de Abra Patricia-Alto Nieva en el año 2005 con el objetivo de crear una Reserva Privada para proteger al Buho Lechucita bigotona y otras especies amenazadas que habitan estos bosques misteriosos. En esas áreas La Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos con sus investigadores David Geale y Juvenal Ccahuana, ayudados por los guardabosques de la reserva Privada, empezó un inventario progresivo y control de la avifauna existente. Los guardabosques – Domingo, Roberto, Santiago y Juan – son residentes locales quienes conocen a fondo estas tierras y fue fundamental su participación en el éxito temprano de las investigaciones.
