Vilcanota Project
The Vilcanota Project ("Reserva Comunal de los bosques de Polylepis en la Cordillera del Vilcanota") is ECOAN's flagship; it has been running since March 2004 and benefits three Globally Endangered and Critically Endangered bird species as well as over 600 families. Activities are varied, including reforestation, biodiversity monitoring, establishing communal reserves and community outreach programs targeting health, education and civil rights of the campesinos in the area. An important component of the project is the annual participation of volunteers from around the world in tree planting, education and construction of greenhouses and communal buildings. The vast majority of the world's known population of Royal Cinclodes (Cinclodes aricomae) is found within the communal reserves ECOAN has created and proposed in the Vilcanota Mountains, while the Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant (Anairetes alpinus) and White-browed Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura xenothorax) are also target species.
